Learning Objectives: The objective of the course is to introduce non-majors to the structure and function of the human organ systems and major environmental issues. You will learn this information from the posted lectures, from the completion of assignments, quizzes, learning exercises and of course the study of the text. Please take advantage and explore the outside resources such as animations and websites available to you through the Moodle site for each topic. Your understanding of the material will be evaluated using assignments, quizzes and tests. I am available by phone, email and in person (for those living close by) to clarify any lecture topics and offer study tips for mastering the material; however, please give us adequate time to discuss these important issues before any given exam or quiz. Upon completion of this course student should be able to: The student will describe and integrate basic biological principles and define basic biological terms presented in lecture, required texts, and other instructional materials, citing specific examples when asked. These principles include the following areas: • the philosophy and characteristics of science and the scientific method • the difference between hypotheses, theories and laws in science • the characteristics of living things and how living things differ from inanimate objects • the major integrating themes of biology: cell theory, inheritance, and evolution • the chemical architecture of living things and the functions of the major groups of biological molecules • the parts, their structure and functions, of animal cells, how animal cells differ from plant cells and prokaryotic cells, cell metabolism including anabolic and catabolic processes, and cell division processes (mitosis and meiosis) • human genetics, especially the relationship between genetics and human health • human nutritional requirements and the role of nutrition and fitness in human health • the hierarchical architecture of the human body: molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and whole organism • the anatomy and physiology of the systems that make up the human body, including skeletal, integumentary, muscular, circulatory, digestive, respiratory, excretory, nervous, endocrine, immune, and reproductive systems • human evolution, its mechanisms and history • the interrelationships between humans and their environments (behavior and ecology)
